Resilience and resistance

Resilience is the ability to recover from disturbance, and resistance is avoiding being affected by disturbances.  Both concepts incorporate environmental tolerance, which is an important concept in ecology.

These concepts are very important to natural resource issues, especially considering uncertainty in the future as a result of climate change and rising human populations. Resource managers need to consider resilience and resistance of the resources in conservation and utilization not only to ensure that the resources aren't depleted unsustainably, but also to guide restoration and adaptive management practices into the future.
